We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again – summer is coming, and as we’re just about to reach December, everyone will soon be jumping for joy as they start their summer holidays. Maybe some of you might be planning to get outta town for the hols, but I couldn’t think of any better way to spend the summer than right here in our beloved River City.

Check out five hot ways to make this summer in Brisbane the best yet.

Barrack for the Aussies

There’s no better way to spend your summer than cheering the Aussies to victory on home soil. Tennis fans, get your screaming voices ready and jam a backwards-facing hat on your head for the Brisbane Internatiional. There’s sure to be plenty to shout about with both Aussie favourites Hewwy and Stosur to tear up the courts from Janurary 4th to 11th.

If whacking a ball over a net repeatedly isn’t for you, there’s also a fair bit of action going down over at The Gabba. The Commonwealth Bank Test against India opens up on December 4th – 8th, and is already shaping up to be an exciting game full of drama. Check out more details here.

Pack a picnic

Catering a cute little mid-summer picnic is such a lovely way to soak up some sun, and it really couldn’t be easier. Chuck a hot chook, a bucket of coleslaw, a few crusty buns and maybe a cheeky beverage or two into a basket, and away you go on your picnic! There’s a whole range of places you can escape to for your picnic, from the nearest green park, to all the way down the Gold Coast. A fuss-free and totally fun way to get yourself, your kids, or your mates out of the house this summer.

It sounds a little crass, but seriously, what is the use in having such fantastic sunny weather if you can’t enjoy it with a refreshing beverage in hand? But don’t worry about the bogan reputation of day-drinking, because there are a few classy options available. For example, why not take up an afternoon of Barefoot Bowls at your local bowls club? Or take a childless drive out to a picturesque winery for a casual day sipping vino?

There’s plenty of ways to avoid being a classless day-drinker, so it’s worth exploring your options.

Go island hopping

Ahhh, another favourite summer image – crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, cut off from the mainland and away from the city buzz. If you’ve got about a week of holidays spare, we highly recommend packing yourself up for a week-long getaway on one of Brisbane’s most beautiful islands. Both Moreton and Stradbroke are stunning this time of year, and provide a fantastic place to go with family and/or friends if you’re looking to get away for a bit. If you can’t quite spare a week, but like the idea, maybe pop a day-trip on the agenda for summer?

Become a festival-fiend

Go out and get amongst all the awesome festivals Brisbane is hosting this summer. From the sweat-soaked technofest that is Stereosonic to the quaint Asia-Pacific Film Festival, and even the carnival-themed ‘Wonderland’ which is brand-new to Brisbane this year. Find them all, and let this summer go down in your memory as the best ever.
